G6 - UV and dust continuum
continuum
- the region of spectrum far away from absorption and emission lines
-
the UV continuum is measured between
nm -
it is dominated by massive, short-lifetime stars (
Myr) -
thus, it probes very recent star formation
-
since UV is effectively absorbed by dust, it is an incomplete SFRI
-
the dust continuum is measured between
m mm (mid-IR to mm) -
these are emissions from dust grains
-
dust cools down in the order of
years, negligible compared to stellar lifetimes -
it measures SFR effectively on the same timescales as the UV continuum
-
it also compensates for the radiation lost by the UV continuum
-
the sum of the SFR from UV and dust continuums is a robust SFRI
